Jimmy Strong making a save against Arsenal at Highbury in the first match of the 1949/50 season. Jimmy's shirt caused something of a stir - see the text below:

Arsenal 0 v Burnley 1

20th August, 1949

First match of the season, played in “blistering heat” in front of a 50,000 crowd.

“Strong made three first-half saves which probably prevented Arsenal from swinging the game in their favour.

(This) One was a magnificent tip over the bar from a stinging shot by Macauley”

“Strong, in particular, gave a brilliant display in keeping his goal intact, but I wonder whether his blue shirt with the white cuffs and collar, worn presumably for the sake of coolness, was strictly within the rules laid down by the league?”

In this match, Jimmy also saved a penalty kick from Roper, taken towards the end of the game.
